Dory Wilgus
US Flag and Signal Company

Dory entered the work force at 16 years old as a sewing machine operator in a shoe factory. She moved to Virginia Beach in 1976 and became a machine operator for Palle and Karen Bistrup at US Flag & Signal. She purchased the majority shares in 1998. Her journey from operator to executive has had its share of bumps in the road. From "one of the girls" to "the boss" has been a challenge and has in many ways defined who Dory has become. Transforming from "the employee who could operate every machine and knowing that she can do it faster and probably better", to "the true measurement of my success is how my employees perform" tends to provide the goals necessary to grow as a business women. Since buying the company sales have increased 65% and the number of employees has doubled. US Flag and Signal moved from a 9000 square foot facility in Virginia Beach to a 22000 square foot facility in Portsmouth in 2005.
