How long has your organization been a NAWBO SEVA Corporate Partner? Since 2007

Thank you for being an active partner and advocate for NAWBO SEVA. Can you tell our readers why you are so passionate about the organization? NAWBO has successfully brought together women entrepreneurs, business leaders and professionals to achieve a significant visible advocacy group. This substantial network allows women to gain strength not only from each other but the national recognition of NAWBO provides business opportunities that might not otherwise be available or known to its members.

Based on your experience, what do you see as the most important thing a member or corporate partner can do to grow with NAWBO SEVA? NAWBO SEVA fosters venues for information sharing and networking which provides visibility for both the organization and the corporate partner. Significantly, the women associated with the corporate partner who are not necessarily “business owners” are professionals who can provide insight and input allowing further growth of both the members of NAWBO SEVA and the participating women from the corporate partner.

Can you describe the key business services and solutions your organization provides? As a law firm, we offer significant services in legal and strategic planning areas which include but are not limited to: Business organization, Business succession planning, Tax planning; Estate planning; Trust and Estate administration; Domestic relations; Employment law, Health care, Administrative law and Litigation.

In a few sentences, what makes Huff, Poole and Mahoney’s services unique? Huff, Poole and Mahoney is recognized for its high standard of quality and personal service. The firm is large enough that it has the depth to meet client needs yet small enough that client service and responsiveness remains sacrosanct.

Which city in Hampton Roads do you call home? Virginia Beach

What do you like to do when you're not working? Enjoy time with my husband; like to work-out, and in the winter months, try to get in as much downhill skiing as possible; in the process of redecorating our home and enjoy working in the yard.

The last really great book you read that you'd like to recommend to NAWBO SEVA members and partners? There are two that I would like to recommend. The first is a more recent nonfiction book – The World is Flat by Tom Friedman; this “read” makes one mindful of the rapidly changing core economic concepts and the impact of global economics on our own business and how we need to view, evaluate and reinvent ourselves. Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand is a classic which is very much a “today” novel. Its female heroine makes one mindful of the power of determination and the drive to achieve excellence for self-fulfillment.

Someone you admire and why? Rather than naming any one individual albeit there are several successful and high profile women that I truly admire, I prefer to reference several of the many women I have had the pleasure of an association during my career. I admire these ladies for their flexibility to reinvent themselves and set new goals. While their names would not necessarily be known to you, I would like to describe a few of these women who help drive my own passion for the professional service I provide. One woman, who had been shadowed much of her life by her late husband, a higher government official, who knew little about their financial affairs blossomed into her own. She taught herself to become computer literate, which included expertise with the then new palm pilot, became internet savvy and then she began her own on-line trading becoming quite successful in her own right. Another woman whose husband, a general in the Army who had been the close aid to the late President Eisenhower during his White House years, became a “grandmother” to underprivileged children and went to various schools to nurture and dedicate her time. There is another woman who found herself suddenly and unexpectedly widowed and the sole owner of a family owned business that relied heavily on government contracts. She rose to the occasion growing from a company seamstress to contract negotiator in just a short few months. Another grew from her husband’s confident, aid and house manager to become a corporate executive and is now a highly recognized local community and charity leader. These women epitomize the core characteristic of female adaptability and strength – a common thread among NAWBO’s members.
